CW: mentions of rape, incest, abortion, foetal fatal anomaly
So, there's little over a week to the voting day for the referendum. The last 10 days of these things are supposed to be the most important.
I finally hosted a stall in my small rural town, and am planning to put posters up in it and two others nearby. Did a leaflet drop, and will be door-to-door canvassing tomorrow night.
I'm not even doing a lot - not compared to some other activists. But I'm already tired. And I wonder how those other people keep going (hat off to them, etc).
I think I'm a poor person to have debating it, because any stupid denial of the need for abortion makes me thick with the vehement No person - "do you want to normalise abortion in ireland?!" - IT ALREADY IS!! 3,000 WOMEN A YEAR GO TO FUCKING ENGLAND FOR ONE.
Like, if it's not repealed, what then? Do we keep forcing parents dealing with FFA to the hospital in Liverpool? If they take us to the EUHRC, do we pay them €30,000?
What about victims of rape or incest? Do we really force them to continue on with their attackers child?
Do we start prosecuting women who manage to take the pill in the ROI? I don't think a lot of No people actually want to send someone to prison for 14 years.
"I'm voting No because I don't like abortion" - No one likes an abortion, but it's a fucking necessity. We've only managed not to face this reality for so long because the UK and other European countries looked after ~170,000 women.
